NYC Marathon Five Borough Challenge- Great Experience

Thursday, August 28th, 2008
Foot Locker 5 Borough Challenge Team

Last year was my 12th NYC marathon that I completed. Last year was especially exciting after learning that I was chosen for the Foot Locker 5 Borough Challenge. After speaking with the staff from Foot Locker, and meeting my fellow runners, it was thrilling and challenging.

First, to be challenged to run the race in a time of 3:30 - 4 hours was a great incentive. As I continued my training unfortunately, I severely sprained my left ankle with about 3 weeks left to the race. The days leading up to the race were very exciting, attending a pre-race interview on the weds prior and being part of a race within the race. Marathon Sunday was very special - we all arrived very early and were treated like VIPs.

What a difference from the usual out within 35,000 runners. A heated tent, with private bathrooms, food and drink … pre race relaxation. We were interviewed live by a number of TV stations including channel 4. My whole family was thrilled. Co-racers were great participants and friends that morning, adding encouragement, comradery, and a level of friendly competition. We got onto the bridge to watch the elite women and wheelchair athletes take off.

Then it was our time. Just the 5 of us on the bridge for the world to see… Adrenalin pumping - the gun sounded and we were off. We ran as a group through all of Brooklyn, escorted by motorcycle and bicycle the whole way. High fiving viewers, some for me who were family and friends since I grew up and went to school in Brooklyn. Mile 8 the lead male runners come flying by. By mile 13 ,we are still all together. First ave, NYC, exhilarating despite my ankle pain, with the sheer crowd on this beautiful November Sunday. The race for me now is to just finish. Jogging with a significant limp, my wife, daughters and cousins see me around mile 17 hurting. They are concerned but I am determined to finish.Winding through Bronx back to Central Park and now the finish line with family all waiting.

Finished 4:30 !!! Toughest race because of injury but as big of a thrill knowing that I had the fight to persevere and part of this because I was running on behalf of my borough - Staten Island representing all of its 500,000 people. Thanks to Foot Locker for making this a most memorable and thrilling day and for getting me up to the challenge. Although I didn’t come close to winning the event, I was a winner for finishing and running with 4 other great participants in the greatest city in the world. Will be tough to going back to be a normal racer this year, but as I run I will remind myself during the race of where I was last year. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity.

NYC Marathon Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge

Crossing the finish line!
If any of you are registered to run in the NYC Marathon and see an email soliciting you to apply to run in the Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge, by all means respond! Or, just visit http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/races.php#footlocker for more information. Here’s an account of my experience in 2007: pre-race news conference at Tavern on the Green, received a variety of running gear, lounged in the heated VIP tent munching on buffet breakfast, while occasionally venturing into the cold for interviews with the press, or to our own private portosans, luxury box seats to view the wheel chair and hand cycle starts, and then the elite women’s start! Then of course there is the start of the Challenge, immediately behind the elite women, where you have about 7 miles of running alone to wild cheering through Brooklyn. Did I mention the post race news conference with Tiffany Crystal Trophy awarded to the winner, followed by lunch and more interviews at Tavern on the Green? All of it is a bit unreal. Of course reality returned when my daughter Michelle and I left Tavern on the Green and hopped onto the subway. But of course the fun continued there in the real world where everyone was excited about the race and the great day NYC had for its Marathon.

80s Philly

Rob, DM in training
Philadelphia, PA

Don’t look now but Philly’s having some flashbacks from the 80’s. Since I was only a little boy in the 80’s I truly didn’t get to enjoy what was hot back in the day. It seems that in Philly there are two trends growing they are color pop and Old Skool. With that said, two sneaks hit me right in the face–the Asics Gel Lyte III and The Nike Air Pegasus. They are fresh and they are deep in style. You want color, you want style then these two shoes are your answer. span>

The Bay Blazers

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

When it comes to the shoe game in The Bay, the hottest shoe for us here in the store would be Blazers. Almost every colorway that has come out has been hot and I feel that Dunk Hi’s would be a close second. Retro J’s and AF1 still dominate overall but the Blazers have really made a huge push from nowhere. This is because they are skate style shoe and hi-tops have really made a come back this past year. OG colorways is almost anything Nike sells very well as we are now dealing with a lot of the younger generations that have only seen these shoes on the internet or for 3X’s the retail on Ebay. Most of these kids are all over the internet and are reading about how the quality of the retro shoes has dropped so the quality of the shoe is also very important. Most people are tired of the same old J’s and the hype on Dunk’s especially SB’s has dropped. People are always looking for something new and although true sneaker heads have been all over Blazers for awhile, the trend, as always has reached the mainstream.

Houston Fusion 5’s

Rachel, manager trainer
Houston, TX

The hottest shoe for ‘08 thus far was the Fusion 5 blk/red. Plenty “shoe dawgs” are constantly looking for this shoe. The hype derived from the retro look, top off with a taste of the AF1 was the best duo combo a shoe could have. Customers in Houston are “HUGE” Jordan fans. All I can say is “when can we get more?”
