With marathon season here, runners are searching for the right shoes to train in. There are a few factors to remember when looking for the perfect pair. Purchase a shoe with two things in mind- fit and function.
Fit:
- Make sure that the shoe fits before you leave the store. At Foot Locker, the sales associates are experts in ensuring that you find the right shoe for your particular type of foot.
- Get measured- some people really don’t know the true size of their foot, and over time your foot’s size and shape can change.
- Study your stride- does your foot pronate (roll-in) or supinate (roll-out) when you strike the ground? There are different type of shoes for each type of foot.
- Check your current shoes- look at the wear pattern on the soles of the shoes- if there is excessive wear on one side, you might need a shoe with more motion control.
Function:
- Look for a shoe with shock absorption and a good cushioning system.
- Motion control is important as well. The shoe should have stability and support to control the motion of your foot.
New athletic shoes are best when worn for a maximum of 6 months. Using shoes after 6 months, the wear and tear can affect the way the shoe supports your foot, which could lead to injuries. Lastly, running shoes should just be used for running. You should not use running shoes for other sports such as basketball, aerobics, or step because they may not provide the proper support, and lateral movements can breakdown the shoe.
