I think of flywire as the air-bubble of the 00’s. It started off in the Hyperdunk, was embraced, spread to other basketball models like the Zoom Kobe IV, even crossed over to running in the Air Max 2009… Now it has made another leap into the ACG group with hiking boots. The holiday 2009 release of the Flnt/Gry/Blk Nike Ashiko at Foot Locker will push flywire’s lightweight support to a whole new audience. Named after ninja ashiko foot spikes, which are used for climbing and traction although they could probably double as an effective weapon, this hiking boot’s namesake is traction, but the real innovation is in support and weight. Flywire and wire mesh encircle the midfoot and ankle with the strength that is normally achieved with clunkier materials. The translucent upper gives a nice window to the stitching and the footsleeve.
I can’t say that I own many boots, or hike up anything besides stairs, but the Ashiko is something I would consider copping. What do you think? More shots after the jump and in the gallery.
