MJ was fully into his first comeback when the XI landed, and the game of basketball, as well as the world of sneakers, has never been the same since. While possibly being used for the first time ever in a performance hoops shoe, the patent leather wasn't only intended to look good. The material also provided weight reduction and an added level of support, unavailable through traditional leathers or suede.
Additional features included the breathable ballistic mesh as well as what may have been the XI's greatest performance achievement: its use of a full-length carbon fiber shank plate.
